College Hookup Culture is a Myth?


Though it does appear that super elite colleges are more likely to foster a hookup culture than others. OpEd from a Harvard Sophomore:

Today’s college students are having slightly less sex that their parents did in college (Um, ew). A new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association found that just under one-third of college students have had more than one partner in the past year. This refutes the much hyped college hookup culture breathlessly reported by the media.

Most of current college students’ sex is in the context of a relationship, though they did report a slight rise in the number of casual or friends-with-benefits sex. It seems that the prolific sex lives and inflated claims of a few are skewing the perspective of the many. The truth is, one in four college students are a virgin and only 20% of students reporting having six or more partners after turning 18. Overall it appears Millennial are having less sex than Generation X..  The crazy millennial kids are actually drinking less, taking fewer drugs and potentially having less sex than their parents (again, ew).
