We’ve all heard yawns are contagious. Now more and more science is telling us social behavior is affected by your social surroundings.
A person is 75 percent more likely to become divorced if a friend is divorced, according to a recent Pew Research study. You’re 57 percent more likely to become obese if if a friend is obese, according to a study tracking a large social network for 32 years. And the closer that fat friend is, the more your chances rise of packing on the pounds.
But there’s good news here too. People with lots of friends are more likely to stay married. Positive emotions and behaviors (to include exercise and eating healthy) are also contagious. The happier we are the more people want to be around us, the more money we make, the better our immune system functions, and the happier we become. It’s an awesome happiness spiral.
Watch it with all that positive emotion though. Because having babies is also contagious.
